10 EPA Awards more than $7.5 million in Recovery Act funds to clean up underground petroleum leaks in North CarolinaIn an effort to protect people where they live, work, and play, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the distribution of $7,554,000 to North Carolina under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 to assess and clean up underground storage tank petroleum leaks. The greatest potential hazard from a leaking underground storage tank is that the petroleum or other hazardous substances seep into the soil and contaminate groundwater, the source of drinking water for nearly one-third of all Americans. 07

24 President Obama Announces More Than $439 Million in Medicaid Relief from ARRA for North CarolinaOn Monday, February 23, President Barack Obama announced in a meeting with the Nation’s Governors that states will be able to access the first two quarters of Federal Medical Assistance Percentage funding (FMAP) – the federal match for Medicaid – starting this Wednesday, February 25. North Carolina’s State plan was originally not in compliance with the requirements for receiving the enhanced FMAP, but working together over the past twenty-four hours, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the state were able to resolve the outstanding issue and FMAP funds will be available to North Carolina. FMAP funding helps pay for health care for the families hit hard by the economic crisis and some of the nation’s most vulnerable citizens. More than 49 million Americans rely on Medicaid for health care coverage and this funding could help 20 million more Americans get covered. 02
24 Gov. Perdue Announces First Round of Road and Bridge Projects as Part of Federal Economic StimulusGov. Bev Perdue today announced 70 highway and bridge projects throughout North Carolina will soon get under way using $466 million in federal economic stimulus funding. The money is the first half the state will receive for highway improvements through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The new federal law requires states to obligate the first half of transportation stimulus money within 120 days of receipt, and the remaining half to projects within a year.
